Key to Balance

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Studying? Of course I take it seriously.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
We're students, after all. Studying is what we do.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
It's not that I like it all that much, but it's just something I have to do.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
I'd rather be practicing or working, to be honest.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Oh? I didn't tell you? I have a part-time job after school.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
I live alone, unlike the others. There was no space at the dorm when I transferred to Rinmeikan.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
My apartment is pretty old and a bit run-down, but it's surprisingly cozy.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
It's not as close to school as the dorm, but it's really a very short commute in the morning.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
It works out well for me, since I can get that much more sleep after getting home tired from my part-time job.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Oh, I make sure I don't nod off in class, though. I'm not like Yuyuko.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
If I'm going to spend the day at school anyway, I better pay attention in class, no?

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
My classes? They're not a ton of fun, but I don't get bored either.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
I think they're easy to follow, and you can tell the teachers really try to motivate students.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
There are quizzes every now and then to keep us on our toes, too.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Hmm... Now that I think about it, I guess Rinmeikan's teaching style is really good.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
They don't try to cram too much into the lessons, and it seems like the teachers care about every one of us.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
It really helps that classes are easy to follow, since I've got acting classes and my job, too!

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
It's easy to talk about striking a balance, but it's actually pretty hard to fit all that in.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
I think I'm only able to do it because I'm here in Rinmeikan.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
I transferred here from another school, so I can't help comparing the two... I'm glad to be here.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
And I'm happy I met Tamao, Rui, and Yuyuko. And Ichie, too.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Speaking of Ichie, she's always getting scolded in class. She should really try to stay focused.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Well, enough about that. The next class is starting soon. I've got to get ready.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
I'll talk to you later!

Battle of Wits

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Hmm… A battle of wits…

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Oh, Yuyuko. I was just about to go find you. Mind if I ask you something?

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
*yawn* What is it?

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
You’re good at expressing small details, right? So I thought you might be able to help me.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
If it’s something that can be expressed through action, I can do it, no problem, but I need to show a battle of wits.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Isn’t it really hard to show what a character is thinking?

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
Ah, I get why you came to me with this. In rakugo storytelling you sit there and make the audience imagine the whole story with just words, after all.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Yes. But how do I show my character’s thoughts and intentions without explaining it?

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Saying out loud what he’s thinking takes away the fun.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
It’d just be a narration of internal monologue. I want to convey the tension of a battle of wits…

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
But I don’t know how to bring the audience into it.

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
Yes, you do have a difficult role.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
I know, right? My character has special powers, being a descendant of a famous mystic.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
But it’s his information-gathering skills that make him really amazing. He’s extremely clever, and that’s what his scenes focus on.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
So he’s the smart guy who digs up all the info… It’s really hard to play.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
And this isn’t just my problem.

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
Huh?

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
The characters all work as a team, so my acting can’t look out of place in the group, either.

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
Ah, I get it.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
My character’s role is to collect information. Yuyuko’s lures the enemy out, and Rui’s battles them.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
This play has a long history, so the audience comes in with expectations about the characters and their roles within the team.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
So we have to keep those expectations in mind but also make it a unique performance only we can do.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
I’ve been thinking and thinking and can’t come up with an answer yet. I’m so pitifully inexperienced.

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
...You say that, but it looks like you’re really enjoying yourself.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
I guess I am. Seeing how determined everyone is, I can’t be the only one slacking off. I want to shine brighter, too.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Plus the original idea was for Tamao to play both this role and hers. Now that I’m playing it, I want to convince everyone it wouldn’t have been as good without me.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
We’ve got to make it a great show that we can take pride in.

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
Seeing you so fired up about it, there’s no way I can say no to helping you.

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
All my advice is going to be able rakugo, though. Is that okay?

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Of course. That’s what I was expecting.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
...Okay! I can see a glimmer of hope now!

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Let’s go to the rehearsal room to give it a go!

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
Yup. Sure thing.

Yuyuko (icon).png Yuyuko:
Hehe, you’re really stoked, huh? Okay, I’ll try my best, too!

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
Onmyodo mysticism... Is it like feng shui? I really don't know much about it. If you know, could you explain it to me?

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
It was the first time I played a mystic, but it was tons of fun!

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
She was a little eccentric, scholarly, and insatiably curious. Poking her nose into everybody’s business and grumbling about everything all the time, too.

Fumi (icon).png Fumi:
You’re right, being a busybody full of complaints IS kind of like me-- Hey, leave me alone!
