Personality[]
Ryoko is a persevering person who dedicates a lot of time and effort into mastering her skills, even at something like a ring toss game.[4], to the point where she was able to get accepted into Siegfeld despite not having any former acting classes[5]. Even so, Ryoko disregards this aspect and looks down on herself if she feels that she's not achieving the same results as others[6]
Ryoko tends to think catastrophically when unexpected things happen, regardless of whether the event is negative in nature or not.[7] Ryoko often undermines herself and her qualities as a stage girl, often referring to herself as a good for nothing[8][9][10] or selling herself short. When Ryoko gets into a negative headspace she becomes unable to perform well, even when she had accomplished the same thing previously.[11] It doesn’t help that Ryoko feels a lot of pressure to stay and succeed in Siegfeld, since her family is working so hard to pay her tuition.[12]
Ryoko is a person who would lie or pretend if it would end up being beneficial to her, shown in how she lies to her mother to avoid worrying her,[13] taking the entrance exam to the junior high in secret[14], and trying to get close to Stella for her own benefit.[15][16] However, she feels guilty about using such methods.[17]
Background[]
Ryoko fell in love with the stage was when she was part of a local troupe as a child. However, her poor financial situation didn’t allow her to have proper acting classes, so she turned to other methods, such as reading books and watching videos on the internet. Ryoko was able to enroll in Siegfeld thanks to her self-studying and many sacrifices her family made to save money. Ryoko hopes to become a big star so she can repay her family with luxuries one day.[18]
Relationships[]
Stella Takachiho[]
Ryoko is the first friend Stella made after coming to Japan. They sit next to each other in class and often practice together. Soon after they first met, Ryoko learned how to do a pirouette with Stella's help, but when she failed the next time she tried, she became desperate and refused Stella's friendship. Through their Revue, when Ryoko claimed that she was using Stella to get ahead of the competition and is good for nothing, Stella reassured Ryoko that she loves her acting and that she shines on her own merit. Stella sees herself in Ryoko, because she went through the same struggles with her self-worth and competency when she was in Munich.
Minku Umibe[]
Due to spending time together in supplementary lessons, Minku considers Ryoko a close friend and "feels safe whenever she's around".[19]. Minku has nicknamed Ryoko "Ryonryon". Ryoko heard the rumor about the Revues' existence from Minku[20], and when Minku notices how she's changed, Ryoko tells Minku about the Revue she had with Stella.[21] Minku loves Ryoko's acting and is inspired by Ryoko's clear love for the stage.[20] She believes that Ryoko has what it takes to become an Edel.[22] While Minku praises Ryoko's growth, it also makes her worried about her own stagnation, and inspired her to take action in her situation with Kuina.[23]
Shiro Ogami[]
At first, Shiro is happy to see Stella make a new friend in Ryoko and goes sightseeing with them. Ryoko is intimidated by Shiro, but she wants to treat her like a friend and see her smile. After Stella and Ryoko fight in a Revue and Shiro catches them coming back past curfew, Shiro starts to feel apprehensive about Ryoko, feeling as though the Stella she knew began to change once Ryoko appeared.
Kuina Moriyasu[]
Kuina and Ryoko are not very close, but they are friendly with each other. After Ryoko gains more confidence through her Revue with Stella, Kuina notices her change and says that she underestimated her.

- The name Ryoko Kobato is based on the extinct passenger pigeon (リョコウバト, ryokōbato).
- The given name Ryōko means "good" (良) (ryō) and "child, (figuratively) girl" (子) (ko).
- Ryoko's surname Kobato means "small" (小) (ko) and "pigeon" (鳩) (bato).
Trivia[]
- The time on the clock on her Revue cape is around 7:07, or 19:07. While the last fully confirmed record of a wild passenger pigeon was in 1901, there were several claimed sightings up until 1907. The last passenger pigeon in captivity died in 1914.
- If going with the year of extinction in the wild, the time on Ryoko's clock is the closest to extinction.
