Synopsis[]
WARNING: This section contains spoilers for the stage play.
Karen, Mahiru, Maya, and Futaba are waiting nervously outside the building where they'll take the acceptance exam for the New National First Theater Troupe. When the others decide to go in, Karen says she'll go to the convenience store first to buy a pen for herself, saying it's her good luck charm. This worries the rest, because it's close to the exam time, but she swears she's fine, and cheers them on. Before she can leave, Hisame appears, late to enter herself because she got too into her vocal practice up until the last minute, and Koharu already went in. When she realizes Karen isn't taking the exam, she questions her decision, bringing up how the instructor even complimented Karen, saying she could get into the Ace Class that only one person can get into every few years, and Koharu was sad that she couldn't receive the same praise. Karen says that it doesn't matter what class you get into, because it's important that they entertain any audience on any stage. She then realizes from her own statement that "it doesn't matter where they are". Karen cheers Hisame on, and once she's gone, tries to call Seisho to talk to Souda-sensei, but Souda appears on stage.
Souda says she expected her to give up on the exam, because it seemed like she was suffering for the previous month, and asks her if she regrets it. Karen says she will regret it, and reminisces about watching Starlight with Hikari, which Souda starred in. She says that she still hasn't grasped the brilliance that she really desires, and doesn't even know what it is. She recalls Souda teling her that in order to become a star, she must shine herself first, and begs Souda to let her go "gather a star" and search for her reason to stand on stage. Souda rejects this at first as her high school teacher, telling her to take the exam. However, she understands Karen's feelings as an actress, and tells her that the only person who can fill the hole in her heart is herself. Then she asks Karen if she can speak English, because she has to go to England, become Flora, and not let go of Claire's hand. She comments on how Hikari left Japan because she was afraid of Karen's brilliance, and Karen nods, running off.
Souda-sensei reminisces about Hikari transferring to Seisho, and the 99th Class coming together on that day, which she'll never forget. The 99th Class then perform 3·7·5·1·0, all in their Seisho uniforms, like the audience is being shown Souda's memory. Souda laments how she decided to shine enough for both her and her precious friend, and passed through the doors of the New National First Theater Troupe, but Karen decided to shine for her precious friend, and turned her back on those doors. She says that Karen's regret is wonderful, because that's also a part of her life.
Akira is shown in the Siegfeld student council room, struggling to draft her valedictory speech. She first suggests that a bronze statue of herself should be erected so that her presence can be felt and Siegfeld won't collapse, and then begins talking about conversing with current students, but feels like it's too much like a sermon rather than a congratulatory speech. She calls out to Michiru for help, but Michiru is away figuring out her housing situation for April. Akira then pivots her attention to the New National First Theater Troupe exam, impatient to see the results as she wants to know who passed and will be her rivals. She sings a song about how excited she is to face her new rivals in the New National First Theater Troupe, and then says that she hopes they will all make her regret not choosing the path of the New National.
In London, Hikari asks Nana how she did on her exam (likely for RATA), and Nana says she thinks she did okay. Hikari says she'll be fine because she got a good score on the TOEIC, and when Nana worries about the professional jargon, Hikari hands her a book, saying she'll help her out. Nana will be roommates with Hikari in London, and continue studying in London even if she doesn't pass the exam. Nana asks Hikari if she's keeping in touch with Karen (she isn't), and finds it strange that Karen hasn't contacted Hikari either. Hikari says it's fine, because she was the one who suddenly disappeared, and Nana says that the old Karen would chase after Hikari to England. Hikari says that Karen is angry at her for running away.
One month later, 7 days to graduation, Mahiru, Maya, and Futaba have passed their exams and are visiting the New National First Theater Troupe for a tour. Wakana Hiyori, a member of the troupe's production team, checks to make sure their preparations are under way, and then explains the class system in the troupe. New recruits are placed into ranked classes for their lessons: Ace Class, B Class, and C Class. The upperclassmen they watched dance are in the C Class, which shocks them. Wakana laughs and says Koharu, who she just gave a tour to, had the same reaction. Maya asks how many people are in the Ace Class this year, and if Koharu is among them, and Wakana says she cannot tell them yet. Maya asks why she's in the lowest class (C), and Wakana says that it's not actually the lowest class, D is, and if you end up there you're a failure. She tells Maya that the classes were decided by the directing team, not the production team, so if she has any complaints she should go speak to them directly. Mahiru and Futaba are shocked that Maya was placed in the C Class, and Mahiru announces that she's in the B Class, apologizing to Maya. Maya asks Mahiru why she's apologizing. Wakana interrupts them, reminding them that they're lucky to have gotten in at all, when they get applicants of all ages from all around the world. Wakana then begins a song about the new recruits to the New National, and Maya, Futaba, and Mahiru introduce themselves through song (reminiscent of PRE CALL).
Michiru meets Junna in the airport, having secretly found out when her plane was arriving. Michiru says she also just returned from an orientation in Germany, and Junna congratulates her on getting into Staatliche Kunstschule München (Munich National Academy of Arts). Michiru congratulates Junna on getting into the New York Musical Academy. Junna says she was surprised to find out Akira would be going there as well, and then Michiru says she has something to talk to her about related to that, grabs Junna's carrier, and runs off telling her to follow her.
With 5 days left until graduation, Karen stands in front of the building where the Greenwich Prime Meridian is projected by a laser, at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. She sings a song about the stars, and shining the brightest as "your" Polaris. She is then called inside by a voice for dinner.
Claudine is walking past the Ginza Wako Clock Tower holding shopping bags, saying her life as a pretty woman in Japan is over and wondering if there's a red carpet waiting for her in France. Futaba catches up to her with twice as many bags, complaining about Claudine just loading the bags off on her and walking ahead of her. Claudine argues that Futaba said she'd do anything if Claudine listened to her complaints, plus this is the last time she can buy souvenirs in Japan before joining the troupe Theatre du Flamme in France. Going back to Futaba's complaints about Maya being jealous of Mahiru and being stuck between them, Claudine tells Futaba to ignore it, because Maya just needs to overcome the new challenge she's been given. She says to Futaba that they're done being friends who work together as the 99th Class and she should look out for herself more as they all go separate ways. Claudine is shocked to hear that Mahiru hasn't left the dorms because she's scared of how awkward it'll be to see Maya, and because of the shock of Karen missing the exam. Futaba wonders if Karen will show up for graduation, and Claudine says she doesn't know, because Karen could even survive in the jungle by saying "Good good!" to a lion while smiling and then eating it. Claudine then says she needs to buy a nice hat for blocking the sunlight in France and skips off, leaving Futaba in the dust.
Futaba has a hallucination of Kaoruko asking her why she's hesitating so much, and if it's because she's lonely because Kaoruko's not there and she can't do anything. She suggests that Futaba comes with her to Kyoto if that's the case, and Futaba seriously considers it, shouting out Kaoruko's name, to which Kaoruko calls her spoiled and walks off. Futaba begins singing about her pain, which Maya joins in to, while Mahiru, Claudine, and Kaoruko walk and dance on the stage.
Maya is left alone on stage, and she visits Seiran General Art Institute to speak with Hisame. She returns a score that Hisame lent her to rehearse singing for the exam. Maya says she knows Koharu has joined the New National, and asks about Suzu's plans. Hisame says Suzu decided to go to a school that has courses specializes in acting and comedy. Maya says it sounds perfect for her. Then she questions Hisame if she really tried her best during the New National exam, because she can't believe that Hisame would fail, with her voice that enraptured the audience during the championship. She says she won't forgive her for cutting corners in an exam where everyone else tried their absolute best. Hisame lashes out at Maya, saying she doesn't know anything about her, and tells her not to say that to her when she's so pitiful for depending on others enough that she doesn't know herself anymore. She quickly apologizes and turns to leave, and Maya calls out to her, saying she wants to sing together with her one day.
Hisame sings a song about how she has to force herself to be alone and end things with her friends, even though her heart feels like it'll break. She then makes a phone call to Nana and tells her that she originally intended to go to a vocal department in a school in Germany, but she was scared that Koharu and Suzu would forget about her if she left them. She thought that she could only try to go abroad if she at least showed that she tried and failed to get in to the New National, and exactly as Maya said, she didn't try her best. She doesn't know what she wants to become, only that she might have spent the past three years satisfied with being nothing but someone's friend, and she's pathetic for still clinging on to that feeling. She says that it was rude to all the other applicants for her to take a test because she wanted to fail it, and Nana agrees, saying that it's also rude for her to assume that Koharu and Suzu would forget about her if she went abroad. Nana says that there's no way they would forget about Hisame.
Akira and Michiru are on stage delivering a speech to the Siegfeld student body, but Akira just talks about how she was so great that she was expected to join the New National in the Ace Class, but instead will attend the New York Musical Academy and will be the top of their class (meaning she achieved the highest score in the exam—though it is uncommon in the USA, in some Japanese post-secondary schools, your rank is disclosed upon admission). Michiru tries to cut her off and give thanks to the audience, but Akira begins singing, and a jazzy song begins where Akira sings about going to New York. Junna is invited onto the stage in the middle, upon which Akira says Junna will be taking care of her in New York, Michiru says Akira's not a bad person, and Junna says she's getting a bad feeling about the future. They sing about going to New York together.
With three days left until graduation, Karen bids farewell to the Greenwich Time Ball, because she has to return to Japan for the graduation ceremony. We are introduced to Yuuri, who works at the observatory and took Karen in after she saw her wandering around on the streets of London crying out "Light" (Hikari in English). As Yuuri expresses her disappointment at not being able to help Karen find her friend, Karen apologizes, revealing that she knew where Hikari was the whole time. She thought she would come to London and not let go of Hikari's hand, but she realized she was angry at her and couldn't forgive her, and that taking the exam so she become an actress who wouldn't lose to Hikari was pointless. But when she came to London, she got lost and cried, and Yuuri found her while she was in London to do some shopping. Yuuri says she doesn't know much about the world of show business, and hasn't really seen many plays either, because she gets to see a beautiful show in the sky every day. She shows Karen the Greenwich Prime Meridian, and explains that it divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, so it's the center of the world, and Karen compares it to Position Zero. Yuuri says that everyone is standing at the center of their own world as the leading role, and she shouldn't try to restrict the actions of others. She tells Karen that her friend Miss Hikari is just searching for herself, and so is Karen. She says that stars that hesitate will be covered by clouds, and Karen begins to say she's covered by a cloud, but she says Karen's clouds have cleared because she said that she won't forgive Hikari. She reminds Karen that everyone else must be worried about her because she's been missing for a month and hasn't checked her phone, and Karen says she has to apologize when she gets back, and says it'd be easier if Hikari just said she hated her. But she couldn't say she hates Hikari, because she loves her, but she loves the stage as well and can act even without Hikari. The scene ends with the clouds clearing, and Karen and Hikari (in her Seisho uniform) sing Seishun Traveler.
With two days left until graduation, back at Seisho, Claudine, Junna, Futaba, Mahiru, and Maya are at school for a school day. Nana and Kaoruko weren't able to come because flights from London were delayed due to the fog, and Kaoruko had to watch her master's performance. Claudine wants them to listen to her about something, but Maya brings up Karen, and they wonder when she'll come back and regret not stopping her. Junna says they couldn't have done anything because it was Karen's choice, and then Claudine yells at them to shut up because she wants them all to join her afternoon party to make them feel better. She begins singing about how they need to just wait quietly and be excited for what will begin. Junna joins in, and then Nana walks in with her carrier and sings her introduction (reminiscent of PRE CALL). Kaoruko joins next, first doing an impression of Maya asking why she's the only one in the C Class, and then singing an introduction reminiscent of her PRE CALL and saying she's Hanayagi Suisen, but they can call her Kaoruko for another two days. Eventually the New National First Theater Troupe trio join in the song as well. Karen appears after the song ends, and they all fuss over her being unreachable for a month. Mahiru asks her where she's been, and she says "the center of the world". Mahiru starts getting angry at her for not taking the exam, but Kaoruko stops her, saying it was Karen's decision. The New National trio continue getting angry at her, and she apologizes, running off.
Nana says that everyone is nervous and lonely, but no matter where they are, they won't forget each other. She remembers Hisame saying in their phone call that "she might have spent the past three years satisfied with being nothing but someone's friend". Nana says that that's a good thing, because it's only thanks to those three years that they can go their separate ways with their heads held high.
Akira is packing her things for New York into a small suitcase, and Michiru is shocked that she's bringing so little. Akira says she can just buy whatever she needs there (while packing away a towel with chili peppers on it). Michiru says Junna said she'd struggle without Japanese food, and Akira pulls out several bottles of hot sauce, saying she'll survive as long as she has them. Then she says she can't forget about "the pride of a Japanese person", and packs a small sword. She asks Michiru about who got in to the Ace Class at the New National, and Michiru says she doesn't know, considering both Maya and Koharu didn't. Akira says Karen was the only one with a chance of getting in, and they wonder why she didn't take the test. Akira says she asked Yachiyo and the underclassmen to find out who was in the Ace Class, but they couldn't, and Michiru is exasperated. Akira says she forgot to pack her super spicy snacks and snaps her fingers, and a Siegfeld student brings her snacks and hot sauce. Michiru sings a song about how she loves Akira and how she'll try to become someone who will shock Akira when they meet again. She then asks Akira if they can go out after she's done packing, to go shopping and eat food, and so she can take pictures of Akira to decorate her room in Germany. Akira thinks it's like having a photo of a great figure in history, and Michiru lets her think whatever she wants. Akira can't fit HOT-kun (the mascot of her favorite super spicy snacks) into her suitcase, and Michiru says she'll help her later (in the final performance, she helps her right away and they close the suitcase together with HOT-kun in it). Akira says she doesn't have time to go out for fun, and Michiru says she does, or she should make some time, because they should have fun as high school girls.
Claudine visits Maya while she practices, wearing her New National First Theater Troupe uniform, somehow getting in even though the door was locked. She laments how Maya hasn't changed at all in the past three years, and how she's still trying to hide the fact that she's insecure. She tries gently to convince Maya to stop forcing herself to practice and laugh together with everyone since it's her last chance, but Maya declines.
In front of Seisho, Kaoruko spots Hisame, and she guesses that Hisame was called there by Karen, because she was too. When Hisame asks about everyone else, Kaoruko says they're practicing, or cleaning out their dorms, and Nana went out because she wanted to enjoy Japan to the fullest before leaving. Kaoruko asks Hisame if she misses Nana, and Hisame says she's fine because they'll definitely meet again. Kaoruko says Hisame's putting on a front too, and Hisame says she doesn't want to show everyone that she's sad because it'll make others sad, and she doesn't want that. Hisame asks Kaoruko if she's not nervous to be parting ways with Futaba, and Kaoruko (very flustered) acts like she isn't. Kaoruko asks if Hisame's going to apply to the New National again next year, and before she can answer, Karen shows up. They ask Karen what's wrong, and Karen says it's her fault that they were fighting, and she has to change, and they don't really understand what she means by that. Karen comments that Hisame looks more cheerful than she expected, and Hisame says after being scolded by Maya and Nana she realized that she's not alone, and told Koharu and Suzu that she wouldn't lose to them. Karen states that they have to keep going, and says that the world is her stage, and wherever she stands is Position Zero. Hikari's phone rings, inviting her to a Revue, but instead of the Giraffe's logo, Karen's crown is there. Karen says that their finale as Stage Girls is beginning, and runs off, with Kaoruko and Hisame chasing her.
Hikari, dressed in her RATA uniform, says she expected it. She sings about wanting Karen to hit her with all of her feelings, and the melody from her PRE CALL Jeanne d'Arc plays.
Mahiru, Maya, and Futaba appear in the Twilight Theater in their Seisho uniforms, confused as to why the theater looks different. Maya says that it must be because the theater can't feel their passion for the stage, so nothing is reacting as it usually would. They're all afraid of being unable to meet the standards of the New National, and not as excited for their futures as they should be. Mahiru says that up until now, they've known their rivals' faces, so they could try to be strong for them, but from now on they won't know who their rivals will be. The buzzer sounds, and the Revue of NO TITLE begins, with the New National First Theater Troupe facing "Rival". They realize that nobody is giving them anything anymore, and they have to create their own way forward. Maya begins singing Star Divine, and eventually the theater begins responding with instruments and lighting as the other two join in.
After the song ends, Karen appears behind them, shocking them. Karen welcomes them to the Twilight Theater as the Revuemaster who stands at Position Zero, the center of the world. She announces the second Revue, New National First Theater Troupe vs World Company (everyone going abroad), titled "Transition". Junna, Nana, Claudine, Michiru, and Akira appear and perform Bright!Light!, and Maya, Mahiru, and Futaba join in in their Revue outfits. Claudine says their encore isn't over yet, and fights Maya, who tries to provoke them by saying that they're dreaming an unclear dream, whereas they have established futures at the New National. Claudine says Maya's not cute, but that's what the usual Maya is like, and calls her a vexing woman, and they go off stage.
Karen tells them to remember the pain they felt when they met in the midst of a transition, summons Korosu to reenact the legendary hazing of #1. Akira swings, making the Korosu jump back, and realizes that the Korosu are the rivals and friends that they will meet from now on. She praises the Korosu, and they all bow to her. Michiru laughs about how Akira can even make Korosu her allies. Karen begins the next Revue, "Revival", Mahiru and Futaba vs World Company and Korosu. They perform The Show Must Go On! and Mahiru and Futaba defeat the Korosu. Kaoruko and Hisame enter the Revue and Maya and Claudine join again.
Karen says if they've remembered their passion, it's time for them to begin growing again. Karen, Kaoruko, and Hisame reveal themselves as the Ace Class, and Karen announces the third Revue, "Growth", with everyone against the Ace Class. They say that they're the Ace Class because they can stand on any stage, so they can beat the others who are so fixated on a particular goal. The New National trio tell Karen they'll make her regret not choosing the path they're on, and she says she'll teach them that the future isn't set in stone, because they're always evolving. They perform Saikai Aizu.
Souda appears at the back of the theater, revealing that the Ace Class doesn't exist at the New National First Theater Troupe, and she only told Karen the truth. The Ace Class is a fake class created to give the students an unseen rival to fight against. Being placed in the C Class doesn't mean that one's skill is worse either; students who are too confident in their position as a top star are placed in that class to learn humility and what it truly means to be a top star, and this way of thinking is the same all around the world. She notes that Karen wants to show everyone that there are rivals and friends on stage, and hopes that Karen to overcome herself one day as well. Karen notices her, and says that up until now, the Giraffe has always responded to Souda-sensei's strong emotions, and she says that it's only natural for a stage actress to control the stage. Karen says she doesn't want to choose her future right now; she wants to see more of the world, and shine brilliantly no matter where she is. She says that they will have to wear different clothes and go different ways and they have to make sure to shine brightly so that they don't lose sight of each other. Karen says she doesn't want it to end, and it won't end unless she wants it to, but that's selfish. Souda says that stage actresses are always selfish. She says that if Karen is Flora, then she must have a Claire, who she must part ways with, and gives Karen one final assignment—to show her what kind of ending she will give to their story.
Hikari appears on stage, and tells Karen that she's not scared of her anymore, and Karen welcomes her back. Karen then announces that Hikari has joined the World Company, and asks Souda-sensei to give them the title for their final Revue. Souda announces the last Revue, New National First Theater Troupe vs World Company vs Ace Class, titled "Climax". Karen says that everyone can shine no matter where they are, as long as they choose to. Souda says that the curtain doesn't fall in the theater until the end of the performance, and the curtains of their lives will remain open no matter what path they choose. They perform Kiraboshi Distance and all take each other's capes/guards off until only Hikari and Karen are left. Karen takes Hikari's coat off.
Hikari says that it's sad to have to turn your back on someone important to you. Karen says that it's painful to chase your dreams until you have to throw away all the time you spent with someone important to you. Hikari apologizes for leaving Karen, and Karen says it's fine, because Hikari can find her brilliance no matter where they are. Karen puts her sword down on the stage and takes her coat off with her hand, and says she will remake herself over and over again.
Maya gives her valedictory speech at Seisho, and Akira gives her valedictory speech at Siegfeld. They reflect on the past three years, both commenting on how they learned that they can't do anything alone, and despite having to part from their peers and fight for themselves, they swear that they will move forward on their paths confidently. Seisho's 99th Class line up at their graduation ceremony, and Karen is nowhere to be found. They joke about how she's in the jungle eating a lot of meat, and Mahiru says she cleaned out everything in the dorm, and they say she'd probably forget something. Junna tries to shush them, but is shocked and yells when Mahiru pulls out the crown hair clip that Karen forgot to bring. Junna, the student council president, introduces them as the 99th Class.
They perform Green Dazzling Light, with Hikari appearing in her RATA uniform. Hisame, Akira, and Michiru join as well. Finally, Karen appears in the background, seemingly on a backpacking trip. Karen and Hikari hold hands as the play ends.
